The Government of Canada is creating a new law to increase the inclusion of people with disabilities in Canadian society. I want you to have your say.
I will be holding a community dialogue to gather input on the accessibility legislation being developed by my colleague the Hon. Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. This dialogue will also assist my office with ensuring that we take a more inclusive approach to the services we offer to the people of Peterborough-Kawartha and will assist me in representing your interests in Ottawa.
Date: Thursday, January 19th, 2017
Time: 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: Evinrude Centre, 911 Monaghan Road, Peterborough
Or, for those unable to join us Thursday evening, we are offering an alternate session:
Date: Friday, January 20th, 2017
Time: 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: Mark Street United Church, 90 Hunter Street East, Peterborough.
The dialogue will be a participatory event, and those in attendance will be asked to share their thoughts on the following questions:
- What are some examples of when you have felt included and fully able to participate in our community?
- What activities or opportunities are you unable to participate in? What prevents your participation?
- What issues or barriers should the law cover?
- What is the best way to get people and organizations to follow the law?
- How can the government raise awareness, change attitudes and show leadership to increase inclusion, participation and equality of opportunity?
All residents of Peterborough-Kawartha are welcome to attend. We especially look forward to hearing from people living with disabilities, their families, caregivers, and supporting organizations
Both locations are wheelchair accessible with free parking. The Evinrude Centre is on the #7, #8 and #12 bus routes and Mark Street United Church is on the #9 and #11 bus routes. For those who take the Handi-Van, please call Peterborough Transit early to book your spot: 705-745-5801.
For those who need hearing accommodations, CART services (captioning) will be provided at both sessions. ASL interpretation has been confirmed for the Friday afternoon session at Mark Street United Church and will be confirmed for the Thursday evening session at the Evinrude Centre, if interpreters are available. If you require CART or ASL, please let us know in your registration.
To register for either session, please call (705) 745 – 2108 or email Maryam.Monsef@parl.gc.ca before Monday, January 16th at 5 PM. Please specify your accessibility needs (if applicable), which session you wish you attend, and your contact information in your registration.
For those unable to join in person, we invite you to send an email with your thoughts on the questions above to Maryam.Monsef@parl.gc.ca no later than Wednesday, January 25, 2017.
You may also participate in the online consultation of my colleague, the Hon. Carla Qualtrough or by submitting your feedback to the Office for Disability Issues before February 2017. The questionnaire and discussion guide are available in text, American Sign Language, and audio. Feedback can be submitted online, by hard copy, and through video or audio submissions.
